What can you tell us about your country that others may find interesting?

Hi everyone - or, as we sometimes say in New Zelaland, "kia ora".
Do you know what language that is? It is unique to New Zealand.
We are also known as "Aotearoa". This has a special meaning....

I am the lucky teacher of the Room5ians. Some of my students will no doubt fill you in on where we are and what we do.

I look forward to us learning together about each other.

:-) Mr Woody

In the U.S.A there are many different languages spoken. we just did a survey in our class. Students in our class can speak Italian, Spanish, French, German, and of course English.

The USA is a mixture of many different cultures, beliefs, and languages. People come here to live, work, and visit from almost every country around the world. We have been called a melting pot and a grand mosaic. I have friends in many other countries that have been here. They say this diversity is very unique to the USA, though other countries are starting to experience the same thing.

In New Zealand our main to languages that we speak are Maori and English.

Maori are the native people to our country, and the language native to them is Maori, although it isnt usually spoken fluently. Aotearoa, meaning New Zealand, translated to english means "land of the long white cloud".

Here is an example of some of the Maori (One to ten):

tahi (tah-he)
rua (roo-a)
toru (o as in orca)
wha (fa)
rima (ree-ma)
ono (o as in orca)
whitu (fe-too)
waru (wah-roo)
iwa (ee-wa)
tekau (te-co)

The "r"'s are said with a rolling of the tongue.

-Go to this website for some more maori words and meanings:
http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/culture/maori-language-week/100-maori-words

Our Capital is Wellington and the parliment house is nicknamed the "Beehive" because of the shape.

New Zealand is made up of three main islands; the North island, the South island, and Stewart Island.

Are there any words in particular you would like translated?

IM A ROOM5IAN said...

Also, our native animal to our contry is the Kiwi.

Our country is completely surrounded by water and consists of some dangerous beaches, did you know we could drive to Raglan and the to Mount Maunganui in a day? these two beaches are actually on different sides of New Zealand!

Nei-Nei Neina-Marie said...

NZ is in the pacific. We have kiwi slang (kiwis are NZ people, not just the bird) and use funny scentences like 'sweet as' and 'choice bro.'
Kiwi's speak English as a first language, and Maori is sometimes peoples first! I would have to say, Kiwi's speak more English than Maori on a normal day.
Since we are part of the pacific, we have awesome pacific trade expos and things like the Pacifika festival. Those have some really cool things!
Maori is a very cool language to learn. The best one to use, however, is hello, or, Kia Ora! We love our land - although it's not as pure as some people think it is. We have to clean up our act, right?
Cheers,
Your friendly cat-luva Neina-Marie

Nei-Nei Neina-Marie said...

Oh, and backflip2396 asked what are the most popular pets in Kiwiana (my nickname for new zealand).

Hola,

New Zealand has only about 4.2 million people compared to your 8,414,350 people in New Jersey.
New Zealand sits right between two tectonic plates. The tallest mountain is Mount Cook reaching 3754metres(you may think we spell metres funny).New Zealand is made up of three Islands, The North. Is, South. Is and Stewart.Is.

Yeah thats just a bit about New Zealand for you.

P.S.Sorry about any spelling mistakes if there is any.

At the moment I would say 20 degrees in NZ (if that is what you are asking for) and in summer, it doesn't get too hot.
Hamilton (where we are) got a huge drought though. In fact most of Waikato (our region) was in a drought. We dairy-farm a lot of the time, so it was hard for us to get good milk. Did the price sky-rocket, anyone?

IM A ROOM5IAN said...

yes the drought ius a bit of a problem, but it is usually quite moist in the waikato the is why it is famous for dairy farming!

hi, another thing that we discussed in class today is that americans and newzealanders disagree over who we think was first to fly. newzealnaders think richard pierce flew first in 1903 10th of july. americans think the wright brothers they were first to fly.
if you want to read loads about richard pierce visit this website:
http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/AC/aircraft/Pearse-FlyingMachine/info/info.htm
if you want to find out about the wright brothers visit these websites:

http://www.alldeaf.com/current-events/6400-wright-brothers-fraud.html
so mr teehans class, who do you think flew first, can you prove your point? we should have debates over who we think flew first!
goodbye :-)

to describe what it looks like, it is a huge hole that starts big at the top and then gradually as it goes deeper it gets smaller and smaller.
it is really pretty but soon, the people who work there will be turning it into a enormous lake.
to see what martha mine looks like you can go to this website:
